Prices, Quotes and Site Visits

We are lucky enough to receive many enquiries from schools and other establishments who are looking to buy our products or kind of products. We will always endeavour to get back to you within a couple of days from your original approach and we do appreciate also that schools are sometimes at different stages of the buying or selection process – some are a bit unsure of what they want or where the product would be best suited at the site perhaps – whereas other enquiries can be a lot further on down the line, know exactly what they want and have the funding in place.

We will always help at whatever stage your school are at plus you can benefit from our 23 years of experience in this area – it is very rare nowadays that we cannot help or at least point you in the right direction. And of course we can offer alternative suggestions to what has already been proposed if we think this would be beneficial.

Of course the first question we get asked is  – can we have some prices? For some of our product range, we do have specific set price lists which we can easily send out to you but a lot of the work we carry out is tailored to the school’s individual needs where we can pull on our modular build process and our broad range of options. So in this respect it is quite difficult to “package” a price list per se as every job is different. But we can certainly get a budget price to you and send you lots of relevant photos of previous jobs once we have established the following from the school:

  1. The address or post code of the school – we need this information in order to be able to work out a delivery and installation (if so required) price
  2. Details about the site itself – what is the existing surface we would be installing onto (eg grass, tarmac, existing safety surfacing etc) and is it fairly level
  3. Access – how near can we get our transport truck to the designated site (we usually allow for a 40 – 50m carry as anything over that is classed as bad access)
  4. Budget – is there a budget or budget level we should be aware of
  5. Timescales – when are the school looking to have the product delivered or installed

Once we have had a conversation too about what product you are wanting or are able to go through and consider the various options your school are wanting, we can usually at this stage give you an indicative price – this can be presented in a formal quote if so required with corresponding photos or drawings.

Assuming the school wish to proceed further (usually after the project has been greenlighted by the Board of School Governors), we would then typically undertake a site survey in order to firm up on our quotation and provide drawings/layouts etc if so required.

Once this firm quote has been accepted, we send out an order acknowledgement confirming the agreed price and specification. Once this has been signed, the contract is fixed.

We do try and make the whole process as simple and enjoyable as possible.

Outdoor Classrooms – To Enclose or Not to Enclose

One of the most frequent questions we get asked the whole time is “can I use the outdoor classroom all year round?”

The answer of course is yes but there are a few considerations to take into account here. The basic specification of outdoor classroom we offer is a gazebo style with a solid timber felt shingle tile roof  and this is available in different sizes and shapes. But all of them have solid timber lower level panels, a roof with felt shingle tiles and a decking floor with internal benches running internally around the perimeter. The upper section however is open sided – so something typically like below

with vertical balustrading lower panels

However, if you wanted to add another level of protection from the elements (and let’s face it the British weather is pretty unpredictable!), then we can include marine grade PU coated canvas panels to the window and door/entrance. These can be rolled up when the weather is playing nicely but they can easily be let down and secured when it is not so good.

In forest school setting

But we can offer another level or specification and this is why we always ask our customers first – what are you wanting to use the building for? Outdoor classroom of course is a generic term for an outdoor shelter or building but they are used for a whole variety of applications. So if your school was wanting to have an outdoor library, a break out nurture room or a sensory room for example then the application alone would dictate that the building needs to be fully enclosed and therefore capable of being used all year round. And what we mean by enclosed is that instead for having the canvas panels, we would supply laminated glass windows (can be double glazed too), solid timber panels and French doors which can either be made out redwood pine or a more durable hardwood Sapele. Another option up from this is for us to fully insulate the building to the floor, walls and roof. We would only recommend this option if the school was going to be running out electrics to the building and heating it. With an insulated building, it is always worth remembering that it keeps the heat out and the heat in so in the summer, the building should naturally be cooler to be in. Timber too is also a natural insulator.

Once we have established the above, we can then recommend various options and packages and draw upon our most comprehensive range of building options.

New Style of Outdoor Play Equipment in Recycled Plastic

We have been one of the original pioneers in developing a range of outdoor play equipment made out of recycled plastic as opposed to using the more traditional rounded timber sections – we started off which just some simple trim trail items but this has now been extended out to include play towers, mud kitchens, playboat, sandboxes and fitness trails. We are continually adding to the range.

But we have just changed the design of these products to use a more eco friendly rounded section of recycled plastic which is easier to work with and looks very good. It is available in a standard colour of black although brown is available but this colour is a bit more money due to the extraction process.

We will soon be launching an entire new range featuring this eco friendly material as schools more and more are moving to using it.

The benefits of using this material can be found on the two datasheets given

Case Studies and Prices for Sensory Gardens for Schools

We do get a lot of enquiries from schools who are looking to start a sensory garden within their school grounds and of course need to have an idea on prices or how much these type of projects cost.

The sensory gardens we tend to get involved with fall into two distinct camps – those projects which involve a certain amount of landscaping work combining many features which foster the sensory garden elements of sound, smell, touch, sound and taste. We offer an initial design service for these projects so that the school can see exactly what we are proposing after we have had a lengthy consultation and/or site visit. These projects tend to be in the budget area of £15K + and can go right up to £100K ex VAT. We have put together a case studies file which gives details on previous sensory gardens we have designed with an attendant budget cost for each one included.

Or we can offer a range of products which are suitable for sensory gardens but which typically involve little or no installation and some of these sensory products can be free standing. These range of products are delivered by a transport company – examples of these type of products are given below

Light and sound arch with brightly coloured panels and outdoor musical chimes (includes 2 beaters)
Free-standing woodland style benches (set of five)
Mirror reflection panels
Growing box
Living wall tipi den with planters and climbing plants
Melody pole
Multi panel sensory unit
Sofa seating covered in artificial grass
Armchair covered in artificial grass
Sensory light cube with play feature
Chimes musical panel

Drum musical panel
Sensory cube covered in artificial grass
Tactile panel set of 3 (wall fix)
Self-creation den with removable tubes
Sunlight archway
Rainbow posts (free-standing)
Rainbow canopy attached to planter beds
Sensory tactile totem posts

If your school is considering a sensory garden project and would like to discuss the options available, please contact us on 01832 275902 or email info@hideouthouse.com

The Eco Hub Outdoor Classroom

Many years ago, our company pioneered the concept of an eco classroom that featured many items which allowed the children to learn about the environment and sustainability- so the building was meant to both be functional and educational at the same time. They could learn from just being in the building shall we say!

Well, we are now moving this concept on so that it can work on a different and smaller scale. The Eco Hub building is a 4m x 4m outdoor classroom shelter which has our standard felt shingle tile roof and log lap ceiling (which is tanalised to the highest grade 4 for outdoor protection). The side walls are timber lower level solid panels and the back wall is solid running from floor to roof. The front is open sided. The standard model will not have a timber decked floor although there is an option to have this if so required. So far, very normal you might say!

But then we start to add in the eco elements. Firstly, it will feature our very popular and unique renewable energy equipment which is designed to be first and foremost an educational tool. It has a roof mounted solar panel and a mini wind turbine. These create energy which is then stored in a battery which is mounted on the internal monitoring board. This energy is then converted into usable electricity via an inverter so the children can use the sockets to power up laptops, tablets etc. The system also comes with a datalogger and a bulk head light.

The Eco Hub will also include a water butt, roof guttering and water irrigation system (again powered by a mini solar panel) to provide for rainwater harvesting to provide water for whatever the school wishes to grow in the planters provided.

One of the lower level panels will also have a built-in bug hotel unit giving the children the opportunity to explore nature’s various bugs and wildlife!

And you can have roll-down canvas panels to the windows and entrance if you needed some extra protection from the elements and can therefore use all year round comfortably.

And last but not least, the special electricity generating bikes – we are working with a specialist supplier for these. Basically the children have to pedal on specially adapted bikes with built in dynamos to create energy – this will then power up a music system with bluetooth, speakers and sound pads, a bubble making machine and some bright revolving disco type lights! When the children stop pedalling, so does the music  – a good incentive to keep up the pedal power!

We shall be installing the first one fairly soon so we will post a video of this as soon as it is available.

The Construction of An Outdoor Classroom

Another question we get asked quite a lot from schools is how is the outdoor constructed on site and how long does it take? We do have quite a substantial range of outdoor classrooms and shelters within our range so obviously each one is different but we thought that it would be worthwhile taking one of our most popular and best sellers which is the 5m octagonal outdoor classroom. By way of easy explanation, each step is accompanied by a photo.

Typically this building takes 2-3 days to install so a minimal amount of time on site is required.

After the truck has arrived, our installation crews first of all unload all of the various components and carry these to the designated site at the school. Once this has been completed, the transport truck then leaves.

Now the building process begins:

The construction and assembly of the timber sub-frame base which has to be level

A membrane goes down and the decking floor is applied to the sub-base frame

The frame of the building with the half panel walls, support posts and ring-beam are constructed

The roof support system is then built

The underside of the roof starts which is a loglap tannalised (grade 4) roof section

The roof is then covered in a waterproof membrane to make it watertight

The felt shingle tiles then go on top of this and are laid in strips

Internal work on the benching begins to take shape

And hey presto, the finished article! Another classic high quality outdoor classroom from the Hideout House Company

A Guide On How To Decide Your Outdoor Classroom Specification

As a company, we pride ourselves on offering one of the UK’s most comprehensive range of outdoor classrooms and shelters – so this therefore means lots of options and choices for the customer!.

The starting point for the end user is to decide upon the following: how much money do we want to spend (or at least set a budget range which can allow for multiple options), how many children and staff do we need to cater for, what are we going to use it for, will it fit in the designated area and do we want something which is open sided (gazebo style) or fully enclosed for year round use.

We can help in all aspects of above.

If we take the open-sided gazebo style outdoor classroom first. We offer three sizes in the octagonal shape which is the most popular (3m, 4m and 5m), three sizes in square (3m x 3m, 4m  x4m, 5m x 5m) and three in rectangular (5m x 4m, 6m x 4m and 7m x 4m). The standard specification is solid timber lower level panels to the sides, timber decking floor with sub-base and a layer of skirting, internal benching and timber roof with IKO felt shingle tiles with waterproof membrane and loglap ceiling. Additional extras or options include canvas roll-down canvas panels to the windows and door (to give more protection from the elements when so needed), internal desks, tiered amphitheatre style seating, ramp or steps, upper solid panels (to form a wall) with whiteboards. We also offer three colours for the roof felt shingle tiles namely green, terracotta red or black. We can also offer cedar shingle tiles but at the time of writing this blog, these tiles are quite hard to come by with the current worldwide materials shortage and are consequently quite expensive.

And then there are the eco options which help the children foster an appreciation of the environment – this includes our renewable energy pack with roof mounted solar panel, wind turbine, data logger system and monitoring/power board with sockets; guttering and water butt for rainwater harvesting; living sedum roof and a water irrigation system with built-in planters.

We have even recently undertaken a job where we built an extended front decking/veranda area to a 5m eco outdoor classroom.

Then we move onto the fully enclosed outdoor classroom range. Again we offer similar sizes to those listed above but in this instance, these buildings are modular so no-one is ever the same specification. The customer can choose between different window and wall configurations and other options allow for insulation to walls, floor and roof; French doors in either pine or a hardwood Sapele; internal wall options including matchboard pine or white panelling with a decorative V groove; floor coverings to include decking, matchboard pine and vinyl. And in this range, we offer a variety of external timber claddings namely redwood pine (treated), cedar and larch. Windows can either be single glazed (laminated) or double glazed.

Also for this type of all-year-round building range, we offer our Hideout House Cabin and our pods (the pods are pre-manufactured units which come delivered off the back of a transport truck).

If a school is wanting an outdoor shelter – and by this we mean a roof supported by posts/legs – we offer some with either a marine grade canvas roof (available in a choice of colours) or a timber roof with felt shingle tiles. These are available in set sizes although you can join them together to give a bigger m2 foot print. We also offer a unique fire pit shelter which has a hole cut into the top of the roof (with a decorative roof cap system over it) and we are able to offer roll-down canvas panels with special fire retardant properties and fire retardant paint for the underside of the roof.

Used Outdoor Classroom Pods for Sale

We have recently been approached by a school in Northampton who bought a few of outdoor classroom pods from us a couple of years ago. Due to a relocation programme, they have approached us to see if we can help sell them on to another school.

They are painted in two colour schemes – red and yellow.

The cost for each pod is £4,400 + VAT + siting/delivery

This would be a good opportunity to purchase one of our very popular pods at a reduced rate.

Please therefore contact us for further details on 01832 275902 or email: info@hideouthouse.com

New Product Design Service

Technology moves on so quickly nowadays it can be quite daunting but we certainly need to embrace it rather than be scared of it.

A lot of the enquires we get from school staff are at the start of their journey – and by this I mean they sort of know what they want but not really and therefore need some further guidance. So there is quite a lot of initial questions to be asked, a lot of head scratching involvement, sharing of ideas with related parties etc before we usually move forward to providing quotes and design proposals. And as we offer quite a lot of options, we factor these into the discussions as well.

I was visited recently by someone who has just finished university with a first class honours degree in Product Design and he was telling me about AR (augmented reality) and showed me some examples of it. It totally blew me away – the example he showed me was of a new design of kitchen units and appliances which you could customise on screen in a high resolution 3D modelling format. Once you had decided upon your design, you could then (by way of an app) place your new AR kitchen into your existing kitchen to see what it looks like once installed. Absolutely brilliant!

So we will be soon be introducing this design service for our outdoor classroom and shelters range. Customers will be able to pick a product from the website they are interested in – so say for example an octagonal outdoor classroom. They can then choose from a suite of options to add to this  – the size first off and then the various options to choose from eg roll-down canvas panels, renewable energy equipment etc – they can see what this looks like on-line and it will give a build-up price indicator as well.

Once the customer has decided upon the final specification, they can then put that building into their own playground (scaled) to see what it looks like.

Renewable Energy System on Eco Outdoor Classrooms and Shelters

energy monitoring board

When I set up my company 12 years ago, it was built on two founding principles – always try and create new, exciting and relevant product ideas and always try and promote environmental awareness and sustainability within schools. And 12 years on, we are still doing exactly this today!

I originally had an idea of creating an outdoor classroom which not only provided for an outdoor learning environment or extra space but also was an educational resource in itself. So children could actually learn from the building as well as using it. So the concept of the all encompassing eco classroom was borne – it would have a living sedum roof to attract biodiversity and act as a good natural building insulator; it would feature a water harvesting and irrigation system for the built-in planters and beds – but the main feature was to be how we could demonstrate to children how renewable energy is generated and used.

There are many companies out there who can provide solar panels for power – that was certainly one option to look at but I wanted to move on from this slightly and come up with a system which was more educational and easy to install. And was within a certain price parameter. No one was interested in this idea from all the solar power companies I spoke to as it involved coming up with a bespoke design and “thinking outside of the box”.

Until I met with a company who are based in Staffordshire who did a lot of work with schools anyway and they loved the idea! Together we created the educational renewable energy system which is comprised essentially of a wind turbine and solar panel (roof or pole mounted) which then feeds down into a central monitoring board mounted on a back wall panel. On this board are two isolators – one for the solar panel and one for the wind turbine so you can alternate between the two if so required. The energy created from the sun and wind via the panel and turbine is stored in a battery (safely housed on the board as well). This is then translated into usable electricity via an inverter and the provision of two outdoor sockets. It is low voltage so very safe allowing children to plug in laptops, visualisers, tablets etc and use pure, green power! Also included with the system is a datalogger (to monitor such things as CO2 saved, speed of turbine and watts created etc) and a bulk head light.

So to answer the question of this blog – How to promote renewable energy at your school? Simply show them and buy one of these systems!

It is interesting to note too that this system is now sold as an accessory on 42% of our outdoor classroom installations. To see one in action, please click on this video link
